Hair Testing

Hair samples are collected by cutting a lock of hair the thickness of a pencil, generally, from the back of the head. The collector should wear gloves to prevent the sample from being contaminated. The hair should be cut near the root and to around 1.5 inches long. However, a longer sample may be taken if the requesting body wants more information going back over a longer period of time. If there is not enough (or any) hair on the head, hair from other parts of the body may be used. If the specimen won’t have enough hair to be read accurately, a urine test may be required.
